Activities to Support PK-3rd. Grade Writing Skills

Activities to Support PK-K 

Objective: Fine motor control, symbolic thinking, print awareness and understanding that symbols carry meaning.

 Activity: "Draw and Tell" Journals and "Magic Letters" with Finger Paint or Sand Trays.

  • Give students blank paper and crayons/markers.

  • Ask them to draw a picture and then "tell you about it" while you write their story under the drawing.

  • Encourages the understanding that writing communicates meaning.

Activities to Support 1st. and 2nd. Grade

Objective: Phonetic spelling, sentence structure, early punctuation

Activity: “Sentence Builders”

  • Provide students with word cards (nouns, verbs, adjectives).

  • Have them build and write complete sentences from the cards.

  • Add challenge by asking them to illustrate their sentence.

  • Teaches grammar structure and expands vocabulary.

Activities to Support 3rd. Grade

Objective: Paragraph structure, editing, writing for different purposes

 Activity: “Write, Revise, Publish” Projects

  • Students write a short story, informational piece, or opinion paragraph.

  • Teach mini lessons on revising for word choice or editing for punctuation.

  • Final piece is published into a class book or displayed on a bulletin board.

  • Reinforces writing as a multi-step process and builds writing stamina.
