Writing Process Implemented in PK-3rd. Grade

Pre-Writing:

PK-K- Oral storytelling, drawing pictures.

1st.-3rd- Idea webs, sentence starters, thinking maps.

 

Drafting:

Pre-K: Drawing and attempting to write letters or letter-like symbols.

K–1st: Writing simple words and beginning sentences using phonetic spelling.

2nd–3rd: Writing multiple sentences or paragraphs with a beginning, middle, and end.

 

Revising:

K–1st: Done orally with teacher modeling (“Let’s add more details to your story”).

2nd–3rd: Students learn to revise on their own—adding detail, improving word choice, organizing better.

Strategies: Rereading aloud, using peer or teacher feedback.

 

Editing:

PK-K- Provide basic feedback of letter forming and drawings. 

1st: Basic corrections like adding capital letters or periods with teacher help.

2nd–3rd: More independent use of editing checklists, spelling corrections, punctuation.

 

Publishing: 

Pre-K–K: Drawing and dictating a story that a teacher transcribes.

1st–3rd: Writing final copies neatly or using typing tools, reading aloud, displaying work.

Methods: Class books, bulletin boards, author’s chair, digital portfolios.
